Memories of the Present Moment

In my last post, I spoke of my daughter and her youngest child (and only daughter); suggesting, by way of the post's title, that: 'distance makes the heart grow fonder'. Well, in my case distance has served several purposes - e.g. [and in no particular order]
  • My longing for my loved ones has increased immeasurably

  • The pain of separation never goes away

  • The sense of loss is never too distant
  • The feeling of: 'some how being irrelevant' ... often rears its ugly head

I pretty sure, that: 'the heart growing fonder', really doesn't cover it; at least in my case! But as I said in the previous post; I have my memories.

'My Baby & her Baby'

It is indeed strange how memories (of past events, people, moments in time etc) can become so inextricably interlaced with present day emotions and thoughts, that for one brief moment, the past and the present meet!

In my mind, I can see a tiny infant staring back at me with eyes full of wonder and awe, searching for meaning, longing for love. Then as I gaze at the latest photo of my young grand daughter I see that same unmistakeable look that was present in her mother's eyes almost two-and-a-half decades previous!

Some how the past and the present have found themselves happily coinciding in my mind as I am profoundly impacted by a simple gaze! They say that one of the 'gifts' of advancing age, is the ability to remember events and people of long ago. [Notice I said advancing age ... not old age?

I am grateful for so many wonderful memories, and for the opportunity to witness my children and their children creating wonderful memories of their own. I am learning more and more each day to cherish the moment, because 'moments' are all we really have - one moment at a time!
